Elizabeth Johns

My background is in graphic design, and in all my paintings a strong sense of design appears. Ideas are taken from philosophy, stories, legends, history, environment, landscape, weather. 
I am inspired by the Colour Field School and the way colour, space, and distorted perspective unite to form a distinctive view. Working in acrylics on canvas, I engage with the paint to create various effects of flow, flat blocks of colour and layered elements. By recently experimenting with livelier brushstrokes the image is transformed from the idea I envisioned into something quite intuitive and unexplained.
